Tails2

TAMARUKE TAILS

Tails belongs to Jordan and his family. He has only just joined his family but already he has made an instant impact on Jordan:-

This was sent from his mum

We have already had our first "Tails the Wonder Dog" moment. I suggested to the boys that we take Tails for a walk around the block.
The last time Jordan would go for any kind of walk was about a month ago, and unfortunately his bug phobia was topped by a whip snake crossing our path. Needless to say he hasn't been keen to walk anywhere since. Until today. He left the house this afternoon without a second's hesitation, and walked, for the first time EVER, without anxiety or concern. He even introduced Tails to the girls down the street. Not only that, but started showing them where our house is - this is unheard of!
The instant confidence was incredible.

THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR THERAPY DOGS - WE ARE VERY PROUD OF THE DIFFERENCE WE ARE MAKING TO CHILDREN"S LIVES

If i ever had any doubt as to the Value of our Therapy Dogs - Emails such as this make it all worth the work:

I have replaced the name with XXX for "privacy"

TAILS:

Tails is our newest, and very special addition to our family. He has been trained by the wonderful Fudge as a Therapy Puppy for our son Jordan, who has high functioning autism. We also have a 9 year old boy, Dylan. I've read a lot about the benefits of a pet around kids with autism so was keen to get a dog, but knew that this dog would have to be "Jordan friendly" from day 1. I also knew that this would have to be a family dog first. And so I found Tamaruke Therapy Puppies. The perfect pet for our family.

A little background first. When I first applied for a puppy, Jordan had a chronic dog phobia. He loved my parents Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but could not tolerate the presence of any other dog. At it's most extreme, Jordan once froze when he saw a Maltese terrier that must have been a good 2-300 metres away. It was speck on the other side of a reserve from where we were. We literally had to cross the road before he would calm down. We would have to take detours if it looked like we might cross paths with a dog, and his phobia became the undoing of many a walk to the shops.

With a lot of intense work with our child psychologist, occupational therapist and myself, we were eventually able to help Jordan become comfortable around dogs. Our happiest moment was Jordan cuddling and picking up his OT's Maltese and barely giving it breathing space. We could now prepare for Tails arrival.

And so yesterday, our boys spent their Friday at school while we travelled to Tamaruke to collect this much wanted pup. He joined us to pick the boys up from after school care, and was met by two very excited boys who smothered him with hugs.

Within the first 24 hours that we have had with him, a number of break throughs have happened with Jordan already. The first was with a simple walk around the block. Some more background....The last time we attempted this with Jordan was around a month ago. Jordan has a bug phobia that is proving a little trickier to get through than the dog phobia. On this day, a month ago, he was spotting bugs, bees and dreaded butterflies everywhere. I managed to convince him that they really were more interested in the flowers and trees than in him, and we continued. Two houses further, and a whip snake slithers across our path. We have lived in the Blue Mountains for 15 years now, and I have never seen a snake, until then. Needless to say the walk ended there. Jordan has a wonderful memory, especially around traumatic experiences (don't we all!). This would have made our next attempt at going for a walk full of negotiations and distractions to coax him through, so I hadn't even attempted until yesterday. None of this was necessary with Tails by his side. He was a new boy!!! I was stunned when he walked down the street without hesitation, and blown away when he started talking to the girls a few doors down, introducing Tails, and continuing a conversation. Absolutely unheard of with this little man. The instant confidence Jordan had was just amazing.

Our second major break through came with Jordan's soccer game this morning. Jordan is in an Under 6 team, and started playing in March. Before this morning, he had not played a full game, with something always happening at some point in the game that was overwhelming for him, and he would sit out the rest of the game. Sometimes after just 5 minutes playing time. Today, Tails came to watch, and for the first time Jordan was involved and played for the entire game! I was blown away once again.

We also managed to sit through an entire game of my husband's baseball this afternoon without incident. Again, unheard of. I haven't taken the boys to watch their dad play in around a year, out of self preservation, so it made this very significant. And after such a full and busy day, the usual witching hour was a non-event.

Any time today that Jordan has been a little upset, Tails has been there with puppy kisses to make him better, or I have found Jordan quietly stroking his beautifully soft coat.

I am so very very grateful to the wonderful work that has gone into training this wonderful dog, who is now firmly one of us. And I can't wait to see the special bonds grow between him and each of us.

Buzz

Buzz and XXXX are a very very strong team! XXX has done unbelievable well this year in all his programs! Buzz was the incentive for toilet training but he is sooooo much more to us than just a dog!

XXX has had to get a new bed as he had a bunk style bed before so that buzz can sleep at the end of his bed! They are a real team! I am not allowed to open the door when we get home as XXX has to see buzz first! And gradually i have noticed that buzz is happier to see XXX than he is to see me (as i was obviously his comfort zone before! he still looks to me for discipline but the fun one is XXXX!)

XXX couldn't even hold a pencil let alone draw this time last year but almost immediately i got pictures of buzz coming home from kindy! Buzz is someone who has given XXXX unconditional love (like me) but he see's him as a friend and at one stage he use to call him his brother which we have worked on correcting! XXXX will chat non stop to anyone about his doggy and has found his voice in buzzy!

Last thing at night we have to have our family hug and buzzy is a massive part of that! buzzy is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time! he got into the habit of stealing a train from XXXX to get his attention and this just broke XXXX out of his repetitive play!

XXXXX has taught him (by himself) to do a hi five but not just up high, but down low on the side and on the slide too! Buzz will also do a double high five to jump up! sooooo cute!

The most important thing is the development XXXX has made this year!

>BIG NEWS - XXXXX is going to mainstream school in 1 week! He is having an aid but this is something this time last year no one expected!

I went to see "special schools" with XXXX teachers in April and May last year!

All the teachers said wow he is a different child to March he has come along so far!

I feel buzz has really contributed to this!

Buzz is the friend who doesn't care that XXXX can't talk properly, a dog who loves a rummy tub (tummy rub) and gives unsolicited kisses just because....... my christmas present from XXXX was a framed photo of him he drew the frame around it (kindy did it) on the frame was his family, mummy XXXX and buzz! wow

his teachers and aids worked hard on asking about buzz to get him to talk..... this worked a treat as this is a topic that XXX loves talking about, it has made a great difference – his language has improved out of sight!

XXXX sees children he doesn't know when we are with buzz and says “hi do you want to meet my doggy his name is buzz”..... great socialisation!

But if XXXX is having a meltdown wether it be at one of the 5 diff programs he did each week swimming or kindy all teachers worked out if they just asked him about buzzy he would calm down and talk about "his" dog.....

In short buzz is more than a member of our family! he is a friend a companion someone who won't judge someone who will always be the same... buzz will be everything I hoped for!

so charlotte i thank you..... your dogs are not super trained dogs like a guide dog but they are very very special doggies who have their own little way of working out what is best for them and their family!

susan, XXXX and buzz

This email is from MAGG'S Owner (He is named MAX)

I must tell you, Charlotte, that Max performed in a stunning manner about three weeks ago, alerting at a St. Pat's dinner party to the urgent medical rescue needs of a friend of ours.

At the beginning of dinner, our elderly host quietly left the table and went into the bathroom "to avoid the embarrassment (as he described it later)" of having got a large piece of corned beef stuck in his throat. He struggled, in the bathroom, trying with no luck to dislodge it.

Max went into the bathroom with Phil and would not leave his side.  Phil told me later that Max left him only a few times and came right back into the bathroom to be with him.

It took some time for me to realize that Max was legitimately asking me for help, because I was conditioned  to believe that Max would ask for help for only me and for no one else, because he is my service dog and no one else's. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong;

Max was clearly & directly asking me for help with Phil, and we now see that Max alerts for anyone whom he sees needs help, and now that we know that, we see what a huge responsibility it is to take him into public.

Later in the evening, when we discovered Max guarding Phil in the bathroom, Phil said, "Max left my side only to find help; he kept coming back for me until he brought help with him." Later that night Phil went by ambulance to the Emergency Room and had surgery the next day to remove the meat from his esophagus.

Now whenever Max asks for anything, we respond immediately.
